Stephen A. Smith Apologizes for Remarks on Lane Johnson's Retirement
ESPN host faces criticism for comments questioning the timing of the Eagles tackle's mental health-related departure from the NFL.
ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith issued an apology via video on X, formerly Twitter, after facing backlash for his remarks regarding Philadelphia Eagles tackle Lane Johnson's retirement.
Johnson, a 14-year veteran and Super Bowl champion, announced his retirement four games into the NFL season, citing a need to focus on his mental health. Johnson has previously spoken publicly about his struggles with anxiety and depression.
On ESPN's "First Take," Smith questioned the timing of Johnson's decision, suggesting the Eagles' performance through the first four weeks of the season played a larger role than his personal health. "Four games into the 2026 season, a dude that has been in the league forever sits back and says, ‘I need to focus on my mental health.’ Am I making it up?" Smith stated on the program. He further commented, "And this brother said, ‘Hey, my life matters. It’s time. I’m gonna call it quits. My mental health. My mental.' Lord!"
Smith's co-host Kimberley A. Martin reportedly challenged his comments on air, stating, "I feel like you’re making light of the situation." In response, Smith attempted to shift the focus, claiming he was criticizing the Eagles' team performance rather than Johnson's personal reasons.
Later that day, Smith posted a video addressing the criticism. "I’m sorry that when I was on television earlier this morning, on First Take … people misconstrued me minimizing mental health," he said. He maintained that he would never make light of mental health issues and was instead commenting on the team's situation. Smith has previously been critical of the Eagles organization's performance this season. The team also recently parted ways with lineman Cam Jurgens.
