Stephen A. Smith Apologizes for Inaccurate Divorce Details
ESPN personality retracts statements made on 'The Culture Table' podcast regarding Iman Shumpert and Teyana Taylor's separation.
Stephen A. Smith issued an apology this week for sharing inaccurate information about the divorce of former NBA player Iman Shumpert and his ex-wife, Teyana Taylor. The statements were made on Smith's podcast, "The Culture Table."
"In the interest of fairness, accuracy, and decency, I believe it’s important to address what happened in an October episode of 'The Culture Table' titled, ‘Can Men Trust Women With Their Finances?'" Smith said in a statement. "During that episode, I stated that Teyana Taylor walked away from her divorce with $25 million, $10 million in properties, luxury cars, and other assets, while Iman Shumpert, her ex-husband, was left with approximately $2 million and nowhere to live. Those statements were inaccurate, and I want to sincerely apologize to both Iman Shumpert and Teyana Taylor."
Smith admitted that he had relied on false quotes attributed to Shumpert and has since apologized to both individuals personally. The podcast episode in question has been removed at Smith's request. He also expressed regret that the segment may have implied Shumpert had spoken negatively about the mother of his children.
This apology follows recent public apologies from Smith regarding comments made about Philadelphia Eagles lineman Lane Johnson's decision to focus on his mental health. Smith initially appeared to question the timing of Johnson's mid-season retirement on ESPN's "First Take," stating, "Four games into the 2026 season, a dude that has been in the league forever sits back and says, ‘I need to focus on my mental health.’ Am I making it up?"
He later apologized to Johnson on his podcast and again on "First Take," clarifying that he was commenting on the Eagles' performance rather than trivializing mental health issues. Smith is the CEO of Straight Shooter Media, the company behind "The Culture Table."
