Stephen Curry has agreed to a two-year, $116 million contract extension with the Golden State Warriors, a move aimed at prioritizing team success and minimizing distractions. The extension, announced before the team's media day, underscores Curry's commitment to the franchise where he has spent his entire 17-season career.

Curry, whose previous contract was set to expire, was eligible for an extension that could have reached up to two years and $136.7 million. However, he opted for a deal that includes a slight pay cut, reportedly sacrificing approximately $20 million. This decision provides the Warriors with an estimated $10 million in additional projected cap space for the upcoming summer, potentially allowing them to pursue significant roster upgrades.

The Warriors are projected to have between $38 million and $55 million in cap space after the current season, depending on various contractual situations, including that of Brandin Podziemski. This financial flexibility could position Golden State to attract key free agents or make impactful trades as the team aims to return to contention after missing the postseason in two of the last four years.

Curry's extension comes as the Warriors face a transitional period. The team has not advanced past the second round of the playoffs in the last four seasons. Although major offseason recruitment efforts, including an attempt to sign LeBron James, did not materialize, Curry's agreement signals a continued focus on building a competitive team around him.

Despite his age, Curry remains a pivotal player. Last season, he averaged 26.6 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 4.7 assists, while also becoming the oldest point guard to start an NBA All-Star Game.
