Steph Curry Explains Decision to Leave $20 Million on Table with Warriors Contract Extension
The NBA star revealed his wife Ayesha's reaction to his decision to sign a deal worth less than he was eligible for.
Stephen Curry discussed his recent contract extension with the Golden State Warriors, a deal through which he left approximately $20 million on the table. Curry signed a two-year, $116 million extension, foregoing a potential $136.7 million deal. This decision was made to provide the Warriors with greater financial flexibility.
In an interview with ABC7 News Bay Area, Curry shared insights into the conversation he had with his wife, Ayesha, regarding this financial decision. He acknowledged the surreal nature of the NBA's financial landscape, noting that while some might expect stress over such a decision, the sheer magnitude of the numbers involved and the collaborative family discussion made it a different experience.
"That's why sometimes I realize like, this is not a real place, the NBA, because I can also say, people like, ‘Oh, you stressed out about the decision and all that,’ and the gratitude and understanding, the numbers we’re talking about, and of course there’s team valuations and the salary cap, max numbers and all,” Curry said.
He drew a parallel to his first contract, a four-year, $44 million deal. Curry stated that contract decisions are based on available information and personal judgment at the time. He emphasized that he and his family are aligned on his current priorities, which include playing good basketball and finishing his career with the Golden State Warriors on a positive note.
Curry's ability to take a reduced salary is partly due to his long-standing relationship with the Warriors and his established value to the franchise, allowing him to prioritize team stability and future roster moves over maximizing his personal earnings.
