Attorneys for Timothy Hudson, 16, have requested a delay in his murder trial concerning the death of his stepsister, Anna Kepner, citing the need for sufficient time to examine evidence and navigate a complex family dynamic. The trial, originally scheduled for September 8, has been rescheduled to November 2.
Assistant Federal Public Defender Hector Dopico filed the motion for a continuance, explaining in court documents that the defense team requires more time due to the "unique and very unfortunate family dynamic that has resulted from the allegations here." Dopico also noted that the defense has limited access to certain family members, which has hindered their investigation. The filing was deliberately vague due to significant media attention surrounding the case.
Additional factors contributing to the delay, according to the defense, include the "seriousness of the offenses alleged" and Hudson's status as a juvenile. Despite substantial progress, the defense stated that further preparations are necessary.
Assistant US Attorney Alejandra Lopez did not oppose the delay, and the court approved the postponement. Hudson faces charges of first-degree murder and aggravated sexual abuse. If convicted, he could face a life sentence. He is being tried as an adult in US District Court.
Hudson and Kepner, both teenagers, were sharing a cruise cabin aboard the Carnival Horizon in November 2025 during a family vacation. Kepner, 18, was found deceased on November 7, discovered under her bed, wrapped in a blanket. Investigators determined her cause of death to be mechanical asphyxiation. The medical examiner's office confirmed the cause of death.
Hudson was initially charged in February and released under the Juvenile Delinquency Act to live with his uncle. However, prosecutors requested a review of his release, arguing for his custody under the stricter Bail Reform Act due to the severity of the alleged crimes. Judge Edwin Torres ultimately agreed to take Hudson into custody pending trial.
The Kepner family expressed gratitude to law enforcement agencies for securing Hudson's custody before trial. In a statement, Anna's father, Christopher Kepner, and his wife, Shauntel Kepner, stated their hope for a swift conclusion to the legal process and for justice to be served. The family also shared memories of Anna, remembering her as a kind-hearted young woman who enjoyed swimming and making others laugh.
Hudson is currently being held at the Miami-Dade County Metro-West Detention Center awaiting trial.
