Stefany Shaheen has won the Democratic primary for New Hampshire's 1st Congressional District, emerging victorious in a closely watched contest against veteran Maura Sullivan. The win positions Shaheen to potentially follow in the political footsteps of her mother, retiring Sen. Jeanne Shaheen.

The primary race for the open House seat was described as bruising, with polling data in the lead-up suggesting a tighter contest than the final results indicated. Stefany Shaheen's campaign received significant financial backing, with approximately 39% of her total donations originating from donors who had previously supported her mother, according to Politico.

Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, a long-standing figure in New Hampshire politics who has served as governor and senator, actively supported her daughter's bid. Her decision to retire from the Senate created the opening for this congressional race, as Rep. Chris Pappas, who currently holds the 1st District seat, is running for the Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Shaheen.

Stefany Shaheen highlighted her experience on the Portsmouth City Council and the Portsmouth Police Commission as qualifications for the congressional role. She also sought to present herself as the most progressive candidate among the top contenders and publicly differed with her mother on the issue of a government shutdown deal.

Despite Shaheen's efforts, Sullivan's campaign allies ran advertisements critical of her prominent last name. In the final stages of the primary, Stefany Shaheen received endorsements from former Democratic contender Christian Urrutia and former Rep. Carol Shea-Porter.

This election cycle has seen other instances of political dynasties being tested. These include the primary victory of Sen. Darline Graham (R-SC), the defeat of Kennedy scion Jack Schlossberg in a primary, and the loss of Sen. Angus King's (I-Maine) son in a gubernatorial primary. Mauara Sullivan, who previously lost to Rep. Chris Pappas in the 2018 primary for this seat, had worked to mobilize support from the Democratic Party base, particularly in the Manchester area. Another primary challenger, Carleigh Beriont, received an endorsement from former Rep. Dennis Kucinich, though she had consistently polled behind both Shaheen and Sullivan.
