Steelers' Mike McCarthy Regrets Profane Outburst at Aaron Rodgers
Coach expresses remorse for heated sideline exchange caught on a hot mic, emphasizing a desire to set a better example.
Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy stated he was unhappy with himself for his use of profanities during a heated sideline exchange with quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The incident, which occurred during the Steelers' 27-24 Week 4 loss to the Cleveland Browns, was captured by a hot mic.
McCarthy addressed the situation on Monday, indicating that he and Rodgers had discussed the exchange extensively over the weekend. "I wouldn’t classify it as normal, no," McCarthy said when asked about the interaction. "But I think the reality of it is, it’s a 20-year relationship. I think the fact that we were able to sit and talk numerous times over the weekend about that and a number of things."
He further reflected on his conduct, noting his evolving perspective. "Not to put any pressure on my daughter, but I’m getting to grandfather age. I don’t want to be saying those type of words. It’s an emotional competitive environment. But I think it’s something that we can definitely learn from."
The heated moment occurred in the first quarter of the game against Cleveland. As Rodgers waited for a play call from the sideline, a Prime Video microphone picked up the quarterback yelling, "What the f–k? Call it!" McCarthy's response was audible as well: "F–king a–hole."
Broadcast commentators Al Michaels and Kirk Herbstreit acknowledged the intensity of the exchange during the game. Michaels noted that Rodgers had exhibited similar behavior in Week 3 against the Cincinnati Bengals, looking towards the bench while waiting for a play call. The Steelers ultimately won that game 30-27.
Following the game against the Browns, McCarthy initially seemed unaware that the exchange had been captured and broadcast. He was reportedly informed by a Steelers PR director that the incident was picked up by the broadcast.
Rodgers, in his 22nd and reportedly final NFL season, completed 22 of 40 passes for 299 yards, with three touchdowns and two interceptions in the loss to the Browns. McCarthy previously coached Rodgers for over a decade with the Green Bay Packers, from 2006 until December 2018, during which time they won Super Bowl XLV.
Rodgers has previously credited McCarthy as a significant factor in his decision to sign with the Steelers in June 2025. The Steelers, currently holding a 2-2 record, are scheduled to host the 2-2 Indianapolis Colts on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
