Steelers Fan Event in Paris Canceled Due to Security Concerns Amid Protests

A Pittsburgh Steelers fan event scheduled for Sunday in Paris has been canceled due to security concerns arising from ongoing violent protests in the city. The NFL and the Steelers confirmed the cancellation of the event, which was to be held at a bar in the Bastille neighborhood.

Despite the fan event's cancellation, preparations for the NFL game between the Steelers and the New Orleans Saints at Stade de France are set to continue as planned. "Following recent events in the Bastille neighborhood, and after careful consideration, we felt it appropriate not to move forward with the planned Steelers House fan event in Paris," a statement to fans read.

The decision was made by the Steelers organization, according to NFL vice president of global events Nicki Ewell, who added that no other NFL fan events have been affected. The NFL stated that it is working closely with local authorities and partners on all operational and security matters for the international game, and that there have been no disruptions at league sites.

Violent protests have occurred in Paris over the past month, stemming from issues such as the cost of living, school conditions, teacher shortages, and funding. These demonstrations have at times led to fires, looting, vandalism, and clashes with police.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell had previously expressed confidence in the security arrangements for the game, noting that protests are not unusual in France and that the league would be aware and make appropriate arrangements. He also indicated that he had been in contact with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and that officials were in touch with Parisian and French authorities.

The Steelers' designated bar in the Bastille area was canceled as a precautionary measure due to recent disruptions in that neighborhood. The game itself is scheduled to kick off at 9:30 a.m. ET on Sunday.
