Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. will miss the team's Week 1 game against the Atlanta Falcons, with his future with the team uncertain due to a contract dispute. Porter, who is officially listed as questionable with a back injury, has indicated that the lack of a long-term extension is a significant factor.

"I would have to talk to the guys upstairs and my agents about that one," Porter said, per ESPN, when asked about playing with a new deal. The 26-year-old cornerback is entering his fourth season, a common period for teams to negotiate extensions with cornerstone players. However, an agreement was not reached before the season's start, and the Steelers reportedly do not negotiate extensions once the regular season begins.

This offseason has seen several cornerbacks sign deals worth at least $30 million per season, including Christian Gonzalez, Devon Witherspoon, Denzel Ward, and Trent McDuffie. Reports suggest the Steelers' offers are not comparable to these market rates.

While an early-season trade is reportedly a possibility, Porter has expressed a willingness to remain with the Steelers. "No, I don’t think so," Porter stated when asked if the standoff would affect his desire to stay. "At the end of the day, it’s business, and I know what that is and I got my head straight to understand that."

Veteran teammate Cam Heyward offered support, advising Porter to view the situation as a process and to remain ready. "You have to show people you deserve the contract you get," Heyward said.

The Steelers are considered significant favorites against the Falcons in their Week 1 matchup, which will also see the Falcons start quarterback Cooper Rush due to an injury to Tua Tagovailoa. Joey Porter Jr. reacts after a stop during a playoff game.
