Steelers Cancel Paris Fan Event Amid Unrest, NFL Game Remains On
While the Pittsburgh Steelers canceled a fan event citing safety concerns, the NFL maintains its own event and Sunday's game in Paris will proceed.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have canceled a planned fan event in Paris due to recent civil unrest in the city, a decision that contrasts with the NFL's assurances regarding the safety of its own fan event and the upcoming game. The Steelers confirmed the cancellation of their "Steelers House" fan event.
"Following recent events in the Bastille neighborhood and after careful consideration, we felt it appropriate not to move forward with the planned Steelers House fan event in Paris," the club stated.
This move deviates from the NFL's narrative that the ongoing civil unrest in Paris and other parts of France will not impact the league's scheduled activities. The NFL reiterated that its own NFL Fan House event, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, will proceed as planned. "It's happening," a league spokesman told OutKick.
League officials have emphasized their commitment to security for players, fans, and all participants. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell stated he has been in contact with appropriate authorities and spoke with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who reportedly conveyed that the American embassy in France believes the game "will be fine."
Despite the Steelers' cancellation, the NFL is moving forward with its own fan event, expecting several thousand French and American football fans in the days leading up to Sunday's game. "There's nothing more important from our standpoint than the teams' security, the fans' security — everybody involved with this game," said NFL executive vice president Peter O'Reilly. Goodell added, "We've made all the preparations."
