Staten Island Man Arrested After Booting Car Parked in Driveway

A Staten Island man was arrested after he took matters into his own hands by placing a parking boot on a car blocking his driveway and demanding $25 for its removal. Aaron Hardy, 52, of Stapelton, was charged with coercion, tampering, larceny, and weapons offenses.

Hardy stated that he had become frustrated with vehicles, including those associated with sex work and drug activity, frequently blocking his driveway. He had previously installed a “No Parking” sign in an attempt to deter drivers. According to Hardy, he got the idea to use a boot from a police officer who unofficially suggested he could purchase one online.

The incident occurred on October 2, when Hardy discovered a Jeep Grand Compass parked in front of his driveway despite the sign. He then applied the boot and left a note demanding $25 for its removal. Hardy claimed that the driver of the Jeep was dating another police officer, suggesting this contributed to his arrest.

Wheel-locking boots, commonly used by parking enforcement, are available for purchase online for approximately $50. Hardy, who identified himself as a car wash business owner, pleaded not guilty to the charges. He was released without bail and is scheduled to appear in court in December.

During his booking at the precinct, police found that Hardy was allegedly in possession of a stun gun, which led to the weapons charges.
