State Farm has begun distributing a $5 billion cash-back dividend to 49 million qualifying auto insurance customers, marking the largest payout in the company's more than a century of operation. Individual payments are determined by a percentage of the premiums paid on eligible policies in 2025, ranging from 4% to 10% depending on the state. Customers who paid approximately $2,000 in qualifying premiums could receive between $80 and $200.

The distribution is being conducted in waves over several months. To receive the dividend, customers do not need to file a claim or complete a special application. Eligible customers with an email address on file with State Farm will receive an email with instructions on how to access a dividend payment portal, where they can choose between a digital payment or a physical check. Policyholders without an email address on file will automatically receive a check by mail. The company also offers a dividend portal for customers to check their payment information.

State Farm is cautioning customers about potential scams and advises that legitimate emails will originate from '[email protected].' The company will not request fees or sensitive personal information, such as passwords, to receive the dividend.

This payout is enabled by State Farm Mutual's structure as a mutual insurance company, meaning it is owned by its policyholders rather than external stockholders. Founded in 1922 by George J. Mecherle, State Farm was established on the principle of risk-based pricing for auto insurance, initially serving farmers who were perceived to have lower driving risks.

State Farm Mutual President and CEO Jon Farney stated that the $5 billion dividend is a way to return value directly to policyholders. "As a mutual company with a customer-first focus, State Farm Mutual is able to provide value directly to our customers while maintaining financial strength to keep our promises in the future," Farney said. This dividend follows recent auto insurance rate reductions by the company.

Eligibility for the cash-back payment requires having a qualifying State Farm Mutual auto policy covered by the dividend program during 2025. The amount received is based on the premium paid and the state's applicable percentage. State Farm assures customers that receiving this dividend will not impact future insurance premiums, as rates are calculated separately based on expected costs and claims trends.
