Starmer: Europe-US Defence Shift is Permanent, Not a Trump Aberration

Sir Keir Starmer, former prime minister, has asserted that changes in the defense relationship between Europe and the United States are permanent and should not be viewed as a temporary consequence of the Trump presidency. He contends that the U.S. will no longer fully finance European allies, necessitating a shift in continental defense strategy.

Speaking at a British Irish Chamber of Commerce dinner in Dublin, Starmer stated that "things will not go back to the way they were." He emphasized the need for Europe to establish a "common security framework as much as a common market," with the United Kingdom playing a central role. Starmer warned that Europe had been caught unprepared twice: first by Russia's invasion of Ukraine and second by former President Donald Trump's insistence that European nations increase their defense spending.

"A stronger Europe is vital and the UK must be at the heart of it," Starmer declared. He clarified that this does not diminish the importance of the U.S. relationship, which remains strong in military, security, and intelligence alliances. However, he stressed that it enables Europe to assume greater responsibility for its own defense and security.

Starmer indicated that this challenge extends beyond merely increasing defense budgets. During his tenure, he experienced a strained relationship with then-President Trump, marked by disagreements over the Iran war and Trump's interest in annexing Greenland. Although Starmer has stepped down from frontline politics, he has signaled an intention to focus on international affairs, with reports suggesting he is interested in the role of NATO Secretary General.
