Stanford Draws Student Ire Over AI-Generated Marching Band Image

Stanford University has removed an AI-generated image of an all-white, all-male marching band from its Campus Center construction website following criticism from students.

The image, which depicted a band in red blazers and white shirts performing on campus, was posted on the university's website and sparked immediate backlash from members of the Leland Stanford Junior University Marching Band.

In an interview with The Stanford Daily, drum major Jose Serrano described the decision to use the AI image as "pretty stupid," questioning why the university would create a fabricated depiction of the band when authentic photographs were readily available. Sadie Taylor, the band's conductor and executive officer, echoed these sentiments, calling the depiction "frustrating" given the band's efforts to promote diversity.

Taylor and other band leaders formally complained to the Campus Center team, suggesting they use actual band photographs instead of what they termed an "AI slop version of the Band." The university subsequently replaced the AI image with another architectural rendering.

Stanford officials stated that the image was intended as an architectural visualization to illustrate the Commons Great Room, a part of the Campus Center redevelopment, and that the figures were not meant to represent actual band members. Angie Davis, Assistant Vice President of Communications, noted that AI-assisted imagery is standard practice for architectural visualization.

However, band members argued that the generated figures' attire closely resembled their uniforms, and some believed the figures looked like actual band members. Serrano also expressed concern about the university using AI to generate images resembling real students without their consent, calling it "ridiculous" and "insane."

Stanford's own AI guidelines prohibit the creation of content that "depicts, impersonates, or closely resembles a real person." The university has not stated whether the marching band image violated these guidelines.

This incident follows a separate controversy in September, where Stanford admitted to violating its AI policies by digitally altering a photograph in promotional material. In that case, a Hispanic student was removed from an image and replaced with an AI-generated Black woman, and two other students were depicted as thinner. The university removed the banners and acknowledged the breach, pledging additional training and enhanced review processes for promotional materials.
