Karl Lawrence Mentzer, 39, a cocaine-addicted stalker, was sentenced to 88 days time served and an 18-month community correction order after pleading guilty to stalking a former partner. The court described the case as a "very, very serious case of stalking" and a "very, very serious example of stalking." Mentzer's actions included locating the victim, attending her dog park, sending a photo of her husband to her, and confronting her at airports and her workplace.

During his time in custody at Ravenhall Correctional Centre, Mentzer was placed in solitary confinement for 17 days for his own protection after news articles detailing his offenses circulated among inmates, leading to threats of violence. He expressed belief that these threats were real and that other prisoners intended to harm him. The prosecutor stated that Mentzer's behavior constituted "an ongoing grooming of information from the victim for the accused to slowly gain full control of her" and described it as "one of the worst cases of coercive control."

The victim impact statement detailed the severe mental abuse she endured, noting that "physical injuries can heal, mental injuries will generally stay for a significant period or a lifetime." The victim described becoming "hyper-vigilant in a way which was too exhausting even to explain" and living with a "level of fear that was hard to describe."

Mentzer's campaign of stalking began after the victim ended their brief, secret relationship, which started in July 2024 and concluded in January. Despite her explicit requests for him to stop contacting her, Mentzer persisted, bombarding her with messages and calls. He attempted to book a hotel room adjacent to hers at the QT Melbourne hotel and, from his room, installed a spy camera facing the hallway in an attempt to capture footage of the victim. Police found footage of the hotel hallway on Mentzer's phone, along with photos of a police officer and the hotel manager.

Further escalating his behavior, Mentzer hired a private investigator to conduct surveillance on the woman, providing the investigator with her address, vehicle information, and photographs. The private investigator carried out surveillance at the woman's Sydney home and filmed her husband.

Mentzer's prior offenses include assaulting a woman and unlawfully detaining another. His defense submitted that media exposure had cost him business and that he had "almost lost everything." Mentzer told a forensic psychiatrist he took responsibility and promised to stop using cocaine. He is the sole director of an IT company and has a close relationship with his mother. He was ordered to perform community work and undertake drug rehabilitation treatment as part of his sentence.
