Stag's Breath Captured in Chilly London Morning

As Londoners experienced a noticeable drop in temperature, marking the transition to autumn, a photographer captured a striking image of a stag's breath in Bushy Park. The photograph by Cristi Vasile shows the visible plume of warm air exhaled by the stag as it bellowed in the crisp morning.

Vasile arrived at the park before sunrise to capture the scene. "At this time of the morning, it was still dark, so I couldn't really see the deer. Instead, I was listening for them," she said. "The sound of the stags bellowing in the darkness helped me work out where they were."

She positioned herself to take advantage of the low sunlight and the stag's vocalization. "In the cold morning and low sunlight, the backlit stag's breath stood out in the air when he bellowed," Vasile explained. "When the air is cold enough, you can see the warm breath coming out of the animal's mouth, but having the sun behind him makes it really stand out."

Vasile noted that while the resulting photograph may appear spontaneous, it involved significant preparation, including entering the park in darkness, determining the sun's rising position, and positioning herself accordingly. "Then all I had to do was be ready and when that breath appeared in the morning light, I knew I had the shot."
