Staffordshire Council Leader Quits, Marking Fourth Change in Under Two Years

Staffordshire County Council is once again seeking a new leader after the incumbent, Councillor Martin Murray, announced his resignation on Tuesday. This marks the fourth leadership change since the Reform UK party secured a majority on the council following the May 2025 local elections. The party, associated with Nigel Farage, took control of the authority from the Conservatives.

The council has experienced significant turbulence and frequent shifts in leadership since Reform UK's victory, which was part of a broader trend of local government successes for the party across England.

Murray stated in a post on X that he concluded stepping down was "in the best interests of Staffordshire, our residents and this county council." He added that the decision was difficult but that the interests of the county and its residents were paramount. Murray expressed pride in the achievements made during his tenure.

The first Reform leader of Staffordshire County Council, Ian Cooper, resigned in December of the previous year, shortly after his party membership was revoked amid allegations of racist social media comments. Chris Large, who was elected leader in early 2026, resigned soon after, having faced scrutiny over alleged racist activity on a TikTok account bearing his name. Murray then took over as leader in March of this year.

Hayley Coles, the former deputy leader, has been appointed acting leader. She stated her intention to focus on delivering the council's plans, advocating for residents and businesses, ensuring efficient services, and promoting Staffordshire. A formal election for the council leader and deputy leader is scheduled for a full council meeting on December 10.

Councillor Murray will continue to serve as the Reform councillor for Cannock Town.
