St Andrews University Rector Banned From Campus for Seven Years

Stella Maris, the outgoing rector of St Andrews University, has been banned from its campus for seven years. The decision comes after bullying complaints against her were upheld, and she must now seek permission before attending public events at any university buildings until October 2033.

Maris, who previously drew backlash in late 2023 for her remarks regarding Israel's actions in Gaza and the treatment of Palestinians, called the decision "utter nonsense" and expressed disgust with her treatment.

An independent investigation led by Lady Ross found that Maris had exercised "poor judgment" with her comments, warning that her words could encourage anti-Semitic behavior. The university stated that five complaints, raised by a senior university official, were deemed "consistent with bullying" and that Maris's conduct "would not be acceptable in any modern workplace from any employee."

During her tenure, Maris was accused of intimidating staff and student representatives at the students' union. The university court also ruled that her social media posts breached ethical standards. She was also accused of making "unsubstantiated allegations" about the university's leadership team.

Maris has disputed these findings, accusing the university of "institutional bullying" and alleging "sustained dehumanising and discriminatory treatment" by individuals entrusted with upholding university values. She has challenged the legitimacy and fairness of the proceedings.

A spokesperson for St Andrews University confirmed that a "letter of censure" was issued by the institution's supreme governing body following the independent investigation. Allegations made by Maris against the university are reportedly still under independent inquiry.
