Spirit Halloween Unveils Top Costume Trends for 2026
The seasonal retailer predicts popular looks inspired by current entertainment, fantasy, and internet culture.
Spirit Halloween, the largest Halloween retailer in North America, has released its highly anticipated 2026 costume trend report, forecasting the most popular outfits for the upcoming spooky season. The company analyzes trends throughout the year, drawing inspiration from entertainment, gaming, social media, and nostalgia to curate its offerings.
The report categorizes anticipated trends into several themes: 'The hyped and the hot,' 'Myth, lore and high fantasy,' and 'Chaos, horror and pixelated madness.'
Under 'The hyped and the hot,' Spirit Halloween expects a surge in costumes inspired by recent popular culture. The success of the show 'Off Campus' is predicted to drive demand for varsity-themed apparel, including jerseys and jackets. Additionally, costumes inspired by beloved animated toy characters, such as Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and Slinky Dog from 'Toy Story,' are anticipated to be a major hit for families. The retailer also foresees popularity for costumes associated with 'KPop Demon Hunters,' highlighting supernatural heroes and their distinctive styles. A Y2K-inspired 'it girl' aesthetic, characterized by high-octane glam and a sexy edge, is also expected to make a statement.
The 'Myth, lore and high fantasy' category taps into a resurgence of mythological themes, potentially influenced by narratives like 'The Odyssey.' This trend points towards costumes featuring Greek armor, flowing cloaks, and accessories that evoke epic proportions.
In the realm of 'Chaos, horror and pixelated madness,' Spirit Halloween anticipates a continued interest in horror-themed costumes. This includes looks inspired by viral internet scares, new cinematic horror, and classic slasher characters. Costumes drawing from popular video games such as Fortnite and Halo are also expected to be prominent, allowing fans to embody their favorite legendary characters.
Kym Sarkos, executive vice president of Spirit Halloween, stated that the company's prediction process involves continuous monitoring of cultural phenomena. "From blockbuster entertainment and gaming to social media and nostalgia, our team is constantly tracking what’s capturing attention so we can be ready with the looks fans want most," Sarkos explained.
