Spider-Man: Brand New Day Plans Re-Release with Deleted Scenes

Sony is planning a re-release of "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," the current highest-grossing film in North America. The move aims to potentially boost its box office total further and includes previously deleted scenes, notably a cameo featuring Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple.

The film has grossed $950 million domestically and is on track to reach approximately $970 million, having recently fallen out of the weekend box office top five. While the re-release is not yet officially dated, potential windows include the weekend of October 30th or December 11th, ahead of the film's December 15th DVD release.

Among the added footage is a scene where Claire Temple, a nurse who appeared in Marvel's Netflix series like "Daredevil" and "Jessica Jones," treats Peter Parker's injuries after a fight. This marks a connection to other characters from the Netflix shows who have appeared in the Spider-Man film series, such as Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) and Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal).

Another deleted scene reportedly considered for inclusion involves Spider-Man receiving a vaccination, intended to show children that the procedure is not frightening. These additions are expected to total around 10 minutes, keeping the film within its existing two-and-a-half-hour runtime. The re-release could also potentially include a teaser for the upcoming "Avengers: Doomsday."

While "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" has surpassed "Avengers: Endgame" and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" in raw North American box office numbers, its worldwide gross trails "Avengers: Endgame" and "Avatar." The film is currently playing in 2,400 theaters nationwide. The re-release strategy is seen as an effort by Sony to maximize revenue from the year's biggest film, with the goal of potentially reaching the $1 billion mark domestically, a feat no film has yet achieved.
