Spencer Pratt's Voters Could Decide Mayor Karen Bass's Fate

A considerable portion of undecided voters in the Los Angeles mayoral race could significantly impact the outcome, potentially determining the political future of incumbent Mayor Karen Bass. These voters, who showed support for former mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt, appear to hold a deep distrust for both Bass and her challenger, Nithya Raman.

Pratt, who ran on a platform critical of the city's response to the Palisades Fire, garnered over 200,000 votes in the June election. Despite not securing a runoff spot, his supporters remain a significant voting bloc. A recent California Post survey indicates that 13.5% of likely voters are still undecided. Within this group, 43% are registered Republicans, and a majority identify as conservative. Notably, two-thirds of these undecided voters view Spencer Pratt favorably.

Both Bass and Raman face substantial disapproval from this critical voter segment. 92% of undecided voters view Mayor Bass unfavorably, with 73% holding a very unfavorable opinion. Raman also struggles, with a 73% unfavorable rating among this group, and three in four express dislike for the Democratic Socialists of America, Raman's political affiliation.

The poll reveals a complex dynamic where Bass is seen by some as the de facto Republican candidate. She leads among registered Republicans and Trump voters. However, even among her own voters, 44% hold an unfavorable opinion of her, suggesting many are voting for her primarily as an alternative to Raman.

Raman, conversely, is favored by registered Democrats and very liberal voters. Yet, her socialist affiliation is a significant drawback for the undecided bloc, with them viewing her as more extreme by a 3-to-1 margin.

This undecided group also expresses significant concerns about election integrity, with 78% stating they have reservations about the fairness and honesty of California elections, compared to 30% overall. This could pose challenges for voter mobilization efforts.

Concerns about Bass's performance, dishonesty, and the handling of wildfires are leading complaints from those who disapprove of her. For voters in areas like the Palisades, where rebuilding from the fire is ongoing, the mayor's response has been a point of contention.

Pratt himself has been vocal in his criticism of both candidates, previously calling them "corrupt communists." His recent remarks on social media suggest he does not believe Bass deserves re-election due to her "atrocious" record.

Analysts suggest that Bass requires a substantial majority of the undecided vote to overcome Raman's current lead. Even a 3-to-1 split in her favor would likely not be enough, and the potential for lower turnout among this dissatisfied voter segment further complicates Bass's path to re-election. The choice for these voters, therefore, lies between supporting an incumbent they largely disapprove of to prevent a socialist challenger, or abstaining from the mayoral vote altogether.
