Speculation Mounts Over Friendship Rift Between Matt Damon's and Chris Hemsworth's Families
Luciana Barroso's absence from Elsa Pataky's birthday party and a series of missed events fuel rumors of a growing distance between the celebrity couples.
Speculation is mounting that a once-close friendship between Matt Damon's wife, Luciana Barroso, and actress Elsa Pataky may be cooling, with Barroso noticeably absent from Pataky's recent lavish 50th birthday celebrations.
Pataky, married to Australian actor Chris Hemsworth, celebrated her milestone birthday in the Maldives with a group of close friends, sharing photos of the festivities on Instagram. The Spanish actress documented the trip at the Soneva Fushi resort, where images showed her and her friends posing in bikinis. "So grateful for life and my amazing friends!" she captioned the post.
Barroso's absence from these celebrations has fueled ongoing rumors that the two women, who became close through their husbands, have drifted apart. Their friendship initially blossomed as their families bonded, with frequent holidays and social gatherings. The bond was so strong that Pataky, Barroso, Damon, and Hemsworth even got matching tattoos of three small dots on their pinkies in 2017, a design reportedly symbolizing "today, tomorrow and forever."
Pataky previously spoke of her connection with Barroso, noting their shared Spanish heritage and ability to communicate in Spanish as a significant factor in their friendship. "[Matt's] wife is Argentinian so we speak Spanish. So for me, it's a relief, yes, somebody I can speak Spanish with! We've become very good friends," Pataky told PEOPLE.
The apparent distance between the couples extends beyond just Pataky's birthday. Recent months have seen the Hemsworths conspicuously absent from events attended by the Damons. In January, the Hemsworths did not attend a birthday party in New York hosted by Lauren Phillips, a close friend of the Damons, which was also attended by Pia and Patrick Whitesell.
Additionally, Chris and Elsa were absent from the London premiere of Matt Damon's film "The Odyssey" last July. Although the Damons and their friends later took a celebratory trip to Paris, the Hemsworths were not part of that getaway. The group's attendance at the World Cup final, joined by Elsa's ex-partner Adrien Brody, also saw the Hemsworths notably absent.
The last public sighting of Chris Hemsworth and Matt Damon together was in February, when they were seen dining in New York with Luciana Barroso. Elsa Pataky was not present for that outing.
Chris Hemsworth and Matt Damon first became friends over a decade ago. In a 2014 interview with GQ, Hemsworth described Damon as someone he admired both professionally and personally, stating, "Matt's just a normal guy who has the movie-star thing figured out."
