A Florida spearfisherman successfully defended himself against three sharks during a dive off the coast of Destin, using his speargun to keep the animals at bay. The encounter occurred as the diver, identified as Matthew Piendak, was performing a safety stop, a brief pause during ascent to allow excess nitrogen to leave the body.

Footage of the incident shows the sharks repeatedly approaching Piendak, who used his speargun to push them away and maintain a safe distance. He was able to avoid injury as a nearby boat arrived and brought him out of the water before any of the sharks could bite him.

Piendak is an experienced diver and fisherman whose social media accounts frequently feature footage of marine life and large fish he catches. His dives often take him into areas where sharks are present. Wildlife biologist Forrest Galante noted that while sharks do not typically view humans as prey, an "investigative bite" from a curious or agitated shark can cause significant damage.

This incident occurs amid reports of an increase in shark activity. Chris Fischer, founder of OCEARCH, previously commented on an early surge in shark attacks this summer, citing incidents in New York and Florida. Fischer suggested that a rebound in shark populations to levels not seen since the 1960s may be a contributing factor and advised beachgoers to avoid swimming when bait fish are active as a safety measure.
