Spain's World Cup goalkeeper, Borja Iglesias, has voiced reluctance about the prospect of shaking hands with President Donald Trump following the tournament's final match on Sunday.
Iglesias, set to play against Argentina at New York/New Jersey Stadium, expressed his unease in comments to Spanish media, stating, "I don't want to go to prison." He added, "I hope to greet him at a time when we are all very happy, and that it passes very quickly and I can forget about it." The goalkeeper indicated that he believes this is not the moment to create controversy and that people are aware of his views.
"I would love to do many things, but the reality is that even if people think I am all-powerful, I don't have that much power to tackle certain things," Iglesias stated, as reported by All Out Soccer.
Iglesias has previously shown support for pro-Palestinian protesters and was critical of the former Spanish soccer federation boss who faced scrutiny after kissing a player following the FIFA Women’s World Cup. He also commented that he believes Trump "struggles" with individuals who advocate "for progress and for fundamental values."
President Trump is expected to attend the World Cup final. He has previously participated in trophy presentations and celebration ceremonies at FIFA events, including the FIFA Club World Cup. FIFA President Gianni Infantino has credited the Trump administration with contributing to a "historic cultural event" during a FIFA reception at Trump Tower. Infantino also stated that President Trump was instrumental in the World Cup’s "incredible success."
Spain is scheduled to play Argentina on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. ET. The match will be broadcast on FOX.
