SpaceX Aims for Cell Service Dominance with $8 Billion Spectrum Deal

SpaceX is making a significant move into the cellular industry, acquiring approximately $8 billion in spectrum licenses to establish a terrestrial network that would complement its Starlink satellite internet service. This strategic acquisition places major telecommunications companies on edge and marks a substantial step toward offering mobile phone connectivity directly.

The plan requires approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). FCC Chairman Brendan Carr expressed optimism regarding the development, stating on X that President Trump is fostering a "new Golden Age of connectivity in America." Carr indicated that the FCC will closely monitor SpaceX's next steps.

The news prompted a downturn in the stock prices of established carriers, with shares of AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon experiencing declines on Friday morning. SpaceX has stated that, pending FCC approval, it will implement a "flexible architecture combining our satellite-to-mobile constellation in space." This approach aims to leverage both ground-based cell towers and SpaceX's extensive satellite network to create a comprehensive cell service.

Earlier in the week, the FCC granted SpaceX authorization to launch up to 15,000 additional satellites specifically for cellular service, according to The Wall Street Journal. Details regarding pricing and service availability for what is being termed "Starlink Mobile" have not yet been released. SpaceX has not yet responded to requests for comment.

Despite the potential for a formidable new competitor, Verizon voiced confidence. A spokesperson for the company stated, "A company can have billions of dollars of spectrum, but if they do not have the network to use it, it's just empty airwaves." The spectrum acquisition announcement contributed to a rise in SpaceX shares, which traded around $163, a 1.6% increase on Friday, reaching levels not seen since July.

AT&T has not yet commented on the matter. T-Mobile, which already has an existing internet service relationship with Starlink, declined to comment.
