Southwest Airlines Faces IT Outage, Causes Airport Disruptions
A widespread computer system failure disrupted Southwest Airlines operations on Friday, leading to long lines and manual check-in procedures at several airports.

Southwest Airlines experienced significant IT disruptions on Friday, impacting flights and causing passenger frustration due to a widespread computer outage. The system failure, which affected the airline's "IT backbone," led to extensive lines at airports and forced ground staff to resort to manual check-in and boarding processes. The outage also impacted the functionality of Southwest's mobile app.
The disruption began shortly after 8 a.m. ET, with passengers reporting delays and difficulties accessing services. According to Downdetector, an outage-tracking website, the issues peaked around 8:50 a.m. ET, though recovery efforts continued for some customers for over an hour.
The airline confirmed that its IT vendor, Amadeus, experienced a brief interruption. Amadeus provides the critical back-end computer systems for booking, check-in, boarding, and baggage handling for numerous global airlines, including Southwest, British Airways, Lufthansa Group, Air France, Qatar Airways, and Cathay Pacific.
Reports of IT-related problems at Southwest emerged from various locations, including California, Florida, Maryland, Ohio, Tennessee, and Utah. Passengers took to social media to express their discontent, with some reporting being stranded at terminals and unable to complete online transactions for services like baggage payment.
A spokesperson for Southwest Airlines issued an apology to customers for the inconvenience, stating that the safety of passengers and employees is paramount. The airline aimed to resume normal operations and transport affected travelers to their destinations as quickly as possible.
This incident follows similar technical difficulties experienced by United and Delta Airlines earlier in the week. A United spokesperson attributed their disruption to a technical hiccup with their vendor, which impacted system accessibility for customers.
