Southern Nazarene University Football Player Dies After In-Game Injury
Sophomore defensive back Tyler Ulrich succumbed to injuries sustained during Saturday's game.
Tyler Ulrich, a sophomore defensive back at Southern Nazarene University (SNU), died on Thursday after sustaining a critical injury during a football game last weekend. University officials announced the player's death, stating that Ulrich had been hospitalized following the injury.
Ulrich was injured during SNU's game against Ouachita Baptist on Saturday and was subsequently taken to the hospital. SNU President Keith Newman confirmed Ulrich's passing in a statement, noting that he had been "continually surrounded by the love, prayers, and presence of his family, teammates, and dear friends" since the injury.
In response to the tragedy, SNU has canceled its upcoming football game against Southwestern Oklahoma State University, which was scheduled for the following Saturday. The university has also made counseling services available to its campus community to help process the grief.
Ulrich's father, Mark Ulrich, confirmed his son's death on Facebook, specifying that the injury was to the head. He expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and prayers for his son. "Tyler will join many of our loved ones that have passed," he wrote. "Tyler led a life full of faith passion and being a BEAST on the football field!!! He will be remembered always."
Members of the SNU football coaching staff also shared tributes to Ulrich. Head coach Dustin Hada described him as a "Man of God, ultimate example of quiet strength, loyal, worker, joyous." Former SNU assistant coach Josh Stansell called Ulrich a "warrior" and a "rare breed," emphasizing his dedication to his teammates and his faith.
The play-by-play announcer at the game described Ulrich's injury as one of the most harrowing he had witnessed during a football match, according to KOCO News 5 ABC.
