Metrolink Pacific Surfliner train service has been suspended across parts of Orange County through Monday, September 7, due to powerful swells generated by Hurricane Marie. The coastal railroad route in San Clemente is undergoing emergency repairs after intense weather impacted the tracks.

"Tracks between Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo and Oceanside will be closed on Sunday, September 6 due to high tides and conditions along the coastal rail corridor," Metrolink announced. The closure is intended to ensure the safety of passengers and crews and to allow for emergency work on the rail corridor. Amtrak has stated that buses will be used to transport passengers affected by the temporary closure. Both Metrolink and Amtrak operate on the same tracks in San Clemente.

Emergency Repairs Underway

Crews are working to stabilize the railroad tracks by placing large boulders, a measure known as riprap, to reinforce the coastline. Additional repairs may be necessary depending on evolving field conditions, according to the Orange County Transportation Agency and Metrolink. This section of the railroad has experienced repeated closures in recent years due to coastal erosion, landslides, and adverse weather. In 2024, a significant hillside collapse led to debris falling onto the tracks, causing a prolonged closure.

The recent disruption follows a severe heatwave in Southern California, with heavy rainfall from Hurricane Marie contributing to the current hazardous conditions. A Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect for the region until Tuesday night.
