The long-running animated series "South Park" has announced a name change to "South America" ahead of its 29th season premiere on Comedy Central on Sept. 16. The announcement, delivered via a press release, is a direct parody of former President Donald Trump's recent claim to rename Lake Ontario as "Lake America."
Creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone stated the name change was "inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google," referencing their actions to adopt Trump's preferred name for the lake in their mapping services. The "South Park" creators also thanked Paramount, its parent company, in a statement that alluded to the company's merger approval process with Skydance.
The press release included a new title card for the show, featuring the altered name. This is not the first time "South Park" has satirized the Trump administration. The show recently won an Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program, and Parker and Stone marked the occasion by mocking Trump's past interest in receiving such an award.
