South Lake Tahoe authorities are alerting tourists to a surge in sophisticated rental scams that have defrauded visitors out of tens of thousands of dollars. The fraudulent listings, primarily appearing on Craigslist, are designed to mimic legitimate vacation rentals, leading to significant financial losses for those seeking accommodation in the popular tourist destination.
One vacation rental agent, Michelle Benedict of Pinnacle Lake Tahoe Getaways, recounted a particularly distressing incident involving a young woman from South Africa. The woman, who had obtained a work visa, paid $10,000 for a summer cabin rental based on a fraudulent listing. After the scam was discovered, authorities were involved to help the woman secure alternative accommodations.
"Most of the scams come off of Craigslist. Someone takes our photos and our description and posts it online onto Craigslist," Benedict explained. She noted that scammers often use stolen photos and descriptions from legitimate listings to create convincing fake advertisements.
Vacationers have encountered cautionary signs posted at properties, alerting them to the scam. One such sign read, "if you rented on Craigslist, you’ve been scammed." Ryan Lundquist, a visitor to the area, noted his surprise at seeing these warnings firsthand.
Authorities are advising potential renters to be vigilant and look out for several red flags. These include requests for payment through non-protected cash apps like Venmo. Benedict emphasized the importance of verifying the legitimacy of any vacation rental directly with the city before making payments.
"The city of South Lake Tahoe maintains a database. You can search to see whether it is actually a real vacation rental," Benedict stated. Unusually low prices, described as "too good to be true," are also a strong indicator of a potential scam.
South Lake Tahoe, situated on the southern shore of Lake Tahoe and known for its clear waters and mountain scenery, is a popular destination for tourists. The city is located in El Dorado County, approximately 100 miles southwest of Sacramento, California.
