South Korean Captain Apologizes for Gloating About Military Exemption

South Korea captain Lee Gi-hyuk has apologized for jubilantly announcing he would not have to undertake mandatory military service after his team won gold at the Asian Games. The 26-year-old made the comments following his side's 1-0 victory over hosts Japan in the final.

In a social media post, Lee expressed remorse to fans currently fulfilling their military duty and to those who had supported the team. "As an adult I should have thought carefully before speaking," he stated. "I deeply regret having spoken so carelessly, and I will continue to reflect on my actions."

South Korean men are generally required to complete between 18 and 21 months of active military service before the age of 28. However, the government offers exemptions for champions at the Asian Games and Olympic medalists, with the exception requiring less than a month of basic training.

Golfer Tom Kim and footballer Son Heung-min are among other athletes who have previously received similar exemptions after achieving success at the Asian Games. Lee, who was an overage player in the U-23 squad and plays for Gangwon FC in South Korea's K League, added a sincere apology to all fans who had supported the team wholeheartedly and were dedicated to their service.
