The Sioux Falls mayoral runoff election concluded with a near-unprecedented two-vote difference between the two candidates, with former South Dakota state representative Christine Erickson holding a slim lead over state Sen. Jamie Smith.
Out of more than 36,000 votes cast, Erickson garnered 18,280 votes, while Smith received 18,278. The incredibly close outcome has prompted Smith to announce his intention to request a recount, emphasizing that "every vote does count."
While the mayoral race was officially nonpartisan, Smith is listed as a Democrat in the South Dakota legislature, and Erickson, a former Sioux Falls city council member, is listed as a Republican.
Erickson expressed gratitude to her supporters and the city, stating, "I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to lead Sioux Falls forward for the next four years." She acknowledged the close margin and confirmed her team's readiness for a recount. "My team and I are prepared to make sure the recount moves forward fairly with accuracy and transparency," Erickson said.
She also congratulated Smith on a hard-fought campaign and reiterated her commitment to leading Sioux Falls with "common sense" and ensuring city government serves its residents. "Sioux Falls has a bright future, and we will come together to make sure our community thrives today and for generations to come," Erickson added.
