South Carolina Mother Charged with Attempted Murder in Stabbing of Two Children
Police responded to a welfare check and found the children with severe injuries, one potentially facing amputation.
A South Carolina mother has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly stabbing her two young children multiple times at their Spartanburg County home.
Taylor Gosnell, 35, faces two counts of attempted murder following the incident on Saturday afternoon. Police arrived at the residence after a welfare check was requested and discovered the children, aged three and six, with extensive injuries. According to authorities, the six-year-old boy sustained wounds so severe that amputation of fingers and possibly an arm is being considered.
Deputies found blood throughout the home, with smashed mirrors and debris scattered across the interior. The children were immediately transported to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center and subsequently transferred to Greenville Children's Hospital. While they are expected to recover, they are anticipated to undergo further surgeries.
Gosnell, who investigators said appeared distressed upon their arrival, was taken for a mental health evaluation. She reportedly told officers she was experiencing "visions" and attempted to flee the scene. Officers placed her in an ambulance for the evaluation.
Neighbors expressed shock and devastation, stating they had never witnessed any unusual activity from the home. "We’re devastated that that went on over there and these babies got hurt and we’re praying for them," one resident told Fox Carolina.
This is not the first time Gosnell has come to the attention of law enforcement regarding allegations involving children. Court records indicate she had pending child endangerment charges from February 2024, for which she was released on a $5,000 bond for each charge. Those cases remain open.
Authorities stated that Gosnell attacked the children with a knife and a blunt object. She was booked into the Spartanburg County Detention Center on Sunday night and is being held without bond. A judge will determine future court proceedings.
The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office emphasized their commitment to seeking justice for the children. "Our deputies are going to go out there and do what they have to do to make sure that there’s justice delivered for these children," Graham McLellan of the sheriff's office stated, according to WSPA News.
Gosnell is scheduled for her first court appearance on November 12. If convicted, she faces a maximum sentence of 60 years in prison.
