South Carolina Mother Charged with Attempted Murder After Allegedly Stabbing Children
Authorities responded to a welfare check and found two young children with severe injuries; the mother is accused of over 50 stab wounds.
A South Carolina mother is facing charges of attempted murder after allegedly stabbing her two young children multiple times at their Spartanburg County home on Saturday afternoon. Taylor Gosnell, 35, was arrested after police responded to a welfare check and discovered the children, aged three and six, with critical injuries.
Deputies arrived at the residence to find blood throughout the home, smashed mirrors, and the two children severely injured. The six-year-old boy sustained wounds so severe that doctors are considering the possibility of amputating fingers or an arm. The younger child also suffered numerous lacerations, some described by the solicitor's office as deep enough to cut to the bone.
Both children survived the attack and were transported to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center before being transferred to Greenville Children's Hospital for continued treatment. While they are expected to recover, they will likely undergo additional surgeries. The children have been placed in protective custody.
Investigators believe Gosnell attacked her children with a knife and a blunt object early Saturday morning. When she returned to the scene, she appeared distressed and was experiencing what she described as "visions." Police took her for a mental health evaluation before booking her into the Spartanburg County Detention Center.
Neighbors expressed shock and devastation at the events, stating they had never witnessed any unusual activity from the home. "We’re devastated that that went on over there and these babies got hurt and we’re praying for them," one resident told Fox Carolina.
This is not the first time Gosnell has come to the attention of authorities regarding allegations involving children. Court records indicate she was facing pending child endangerment charges from February 2024, having been released on a $5,000 bond for each count. These charges remain unresolved.
Gosnell was denied bond during a hearing on Sunday. A circuit court judge will determine the next steps in the case. If convicted, she faces a maximum combined sentence of 60 years in prison. Her next court appearance is scheduled for November 12.
