Corruption charges against South Africa's head of Crime Intelligence, Lt-Gen Dumisani Khumalo, have been dropped. The charges stemmed from the appointment of a civilian to a senior position within the intelligence division.

Prosecutors had previously alleged that Dineo Mokwele, who held a senior technical support services position, was unqualified and a "token appointment." However, the Madlanga Commission, which examined the appointment, heard that Mokwele was highly qualified for the role and possessed numerous certificates.

Andrea Johnson, the former head of a specialized unit within the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) tasked with investigating high-level corruption, appeared before the commission in July. Johnson acknowledged that she had been unaware of Mokwele's qualifications and apologized for earlier remarks made about her.

Gen Khumalo became head of Crime Intelligence in 2022, following over two decades of service in various police units. Speaking outside the court in Pretoria after the charges were withdrawn, Khumalo expressed relief that "the truth at least is out."
