A political party in South Africa drew significant attention to the country's pothole problem with a protest that inadvertently triggered a rescue mission. The Democratic Alliance (DA) placed a stuffed giraffe's head into a large sinkhole near Johannesburg over the weekend in an effort to draw public outcry.

Evert Du Plessis, the DA's shadow member for roads and logistics, shared a video of the stunt, which was captioned, "A sinkhole so deep a giraffe can stand in it." The intention was to highlight the persistent neglect of road infrastructure.

However, the video's social media circulation prompted several concerned calls to the local Owl Rescue Centre. Rescuers dispatched to the scene, believing an animal was in distress, only to discover the situation was a hoax. The rescue team later expressed their frustration on social media, noting that they abandoned other duties to respond to what turned out to be a staged event.

"When an animal's life might be on the line, we don't wait around, we respond," the Owl Rescue Centre stated. "What if it had been real? Using an actual dead animal to score political points isn't just unethical but deeply disrespectful to our wildlife and biodiversity."

Du Plessis had explained in his video that the giraffe prop was used to emphasize the severity of the pothole problem, noting that the sinkhole had been an issue since February of the previous year with no action taken. The DA, which finished second in South Africa's 2024 general election, is known for its efforts to challenge the ruling African National Congress.
