South African Court Denies Bail to Former Deputy Police Chief Facing Sexual Offense Charges
Shadrack Sibiya will remain in custody pending trial on charges including rape, human trafficking, and sexual grooming.
A South African court on Tuesday denied bail to former deputy police chief Shadrack Sibiya, who is facing charges of sexual offenses. Sibiya will remain in jail pending the outcome of his trial.
Sibiya, who resigned from the police service earlier this month following his arrest in September, is accused of raping an 18-year-old woman, human trafficking, and the sexual grooming of a minor. He denies all allegations.
The Randburg Magistrates Court ruled that Sibiya failed to present exceptional circumstances warranting his release and agreed with prosecutors that his freedom could pose a threat to witnesses. Police have described his departure from the service as a dishonorable discharge.
Sibiya has also been implicated in a judicial commission of inquiry investigating allegations of corruption within the South African police and purported ties to criminal networks. According to testimony at the commission, Sibiya allegedly had close connections with members of criminal networks and received significant sums of money and gifts from them.
The National Prosecuting Authority expressed confidence in the evidence presented, stating they anticipate being ready for trial soon. "We are comfortable that the evidence that we put before the court is good enough, and that is why we got the ruling that we got today," said NPA spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago.
