The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) has launched an investigation into a low-altitude flyover by two Airlink Embraer E-Jets that occurred over DHL Stadium in Cape Town before a rugby match between South Africa and New Zealand. The incident, captured in viral video footage, has raised questions about aviation safety protocols.
The SACAA stated that it is critical to "interrogate this past weekend’s events … to determine if there were any safety concerns which warrant a review," according to the Associated Press. The flyover took place as part of the pre-match festivities for the "Rugby's Greatest Rivalry" series.
While such low flyovers may have occurred previously in South Africa, the proximity of the jets to DHL Stadium has prompted the official inquiry. Airlink had reportedly planned a similar flyover for a match in Soweto, but those plans have since been canceled.
The investigation aims to ensure that all aviation operations adhere to safety standards, particularly when conducted over densely populated areas or public events. The SACAA's review will focus on whether the flyover posed any safety risks that require further action or policy adjustments.
