South Africa's Batting Woes Continue Against Australia
Scott Boland's four-wicket haul exposes top-order fragility as hosts trail by a significant margin after day two.
South Africa's top-order batting vulnerabilities were once again laid bare on day two of the second Test against Australia in Gqeberha, with Scott Boland taking four wickets to leave the hosts struggling at 97-5. The series balance remains firmly with Australia, who have yet to bat in their first innings.
Boland, continuing his impressive form, dismissed debutant Marques Ackerman for three runs, trapping him lbw with a delivery that found the perfect length. Ackerman, opening the batting for the first time in his Test career, defended resolutely for 38 balls before falling victim to Boland's persistent probing. The Proteas have faced significant batting challenges, leading to changes in their lineup, including Ackerman's opening role.
Another new face, Matthew Breetzke, brought into the side based on his white-ball performance, struggled to make an impact, scoring four runs from 17 deliveries before being dismissed by Mitchell Starc. Ryan Rickelton, moved to number six and wicketkeeper after batting changes, was eventually out for 17, edging Boland to slip. Matt Renshaw took a remarkable catch at first slip to remove Rickelton, who had already survived a bouncer barrage from Pat Cummins and a dropped chance.
Boland's performance continued to highlight his exceptional Test record, boasting an average of 18.08, a rate superior to any bowler since World War I. His accuracy and consistency have meant Australia has not missed spinner Nathan Lyon or the ill Josh Hazlewood. Analysis of Boland's bowling shows a high percentage of deliveries on a good line and length, with a significant portion threatening the stumps, a metric where he significantly outperforms other bowlers.
With improved weather forecast for the remaining three days, South Africa faces a considerable challenge to reverse the series' momentum. Much will depend on the resilience of Temba Bavuma, who remained unbeaten on 41, and the bowling of Kagiso Rabada. Rabada's previous performance at this ground, where he took 11 wickets in an innings in 2018 to level a series, offers a glimmer of hope, but the current state of the Proteas' batting lineup suggests a difficult task lies ahead.
