SoulCycle Co-Founder Details Alleged Forced Departure in New Documentary
Ruth Zukerman, who co-founded the popular cycling company, claims she was blindsided when asked to step down as a partner and continue as an instructor.
SoulCycle co-founder Ruth Zukerman has shared new details about her departure from the company, alleging she was pushed out by her business partners. Zukerman, 68, is featured in the upcoming documentary "Spin Wars," which examines the inner workings of the boutique fitness industry.
In the documentary, Zukerman recounts being summoned to a meeting where she was informed she was no longer a partner but could remain as an instructor. She stated that while she had previously discussed her 2009 exit, she decided now was the right time to speak more openly about the experience.
"I kept it close to the vest and as time went on, you know, we get older and we start to look at life a little differently," Zukerman said during a screening at the Hamptons International Film Festival, according to Page Six. "I'm 68. I literally had a thought at one point two years ago... 'Why am I not talking about this?'"
Zukerman, who reportedly taught 21 classes weekly during her time at SoulCycle, confirmed she signed an agreement after her departure, describing its language as "a bit loose." She expressed that keeping her story secret would have led to regret and that sharing it has been "very cathartic."
A 2010 New York Times article noted that Zukerman had left SoulCycle in November under circumstances she was legally restricted from discussing. The article also pointed out that she was no longer mentioned on the company's website, and that the remaining founders, Elizabeth Cutler and Julie Rice, appeared to be "intent on expunging their former partner from their past."
At the time, Rice and Cutler issued a statement saying, "Ruth worked with us for a time. We decided to part ways. We wish her the best." The New York Times described them as appearing "visibly uncomfortable" during their statement.
Zukerman has since reflected on the situation as a learning experience, emphasizing that she "remained true to myself."
In 2016, Rice and Cutler resigned as co-chief creative officers but maintained board positions within the company, as reported by Inc. magazine. SoulCycle is currently operated by its parent company, Equinox Fitness.
"Spin Wars" is slated for release in December 2026. The Daily Mail has reached out to SoulCycle and Equinox for comment.
