Sophie Cunningham Questions WNBA's Handling of A'ja Wilson Fan Confrontation

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham has publicly questioned the WNBA's decision not to suspend Las Vegas Aces star A'ja Wilson following an on-court altercation with a fan during a playoff game. Cunningham voiced her opinion on her podcast, 'No Hesitation with Sophie Cunningham & Drew Hanlen,' stating that she believes there is a double standard within the league.

"She's like the LeBron James of our league, and so of course they're not going to suspend her," Cunningham said on the podcast. "I definitely think there's a double standard. ... [But] we wanted her to play. I think that makes for good basketball."

Wilson, a four-time MVP and a strong contender for another award this season, engaged in a heated exchange with a courtside fan during Game 2 of the first-round playoff series between the Fever and the Aces. The incident occurred late in the Fever's victory at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The fan, who had been pointing at Wilson, was not removed from the arena, and the WNBA did not issue any disciplinary action against Wilson.

Cunningham, whose team was ultimately eliminated in the first round by the Aces, suggested that players should be prepared for fan interactions and that the league's response was lenient. "Us women in sports... we yell from the rooftops that we want equality, that we want to be treated like the men... And we do, we do deserve it, right? But if you're asking for all these fans to come, and you have new fans who are real sports fans, and they do something that a sports fan probably would do if you're on the opposing team, and we're gonna go at 'em for pointing, like, 'You fouled?' Like, grow up. What are we doing?"

Las Vegas went on to win the series and will face the Golden State Valkyries in the second round.
