Phoenix Mercury player Sophie Cunningham was met with boos from the crowd during a recent game in Portland, as controversy continues to surround her remarks on transgender athletes. The incident occurred at the Moda Center on Friday.
Earlier this month, Cunningham stated in an ESPN profile that she wants to "protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men." These comments have drawn significant attention and debate.
The controversy escalated when two young fans, wearing apparel from XX-XY Athletics and holding signs in support of Cunningham, were reportedly called "f–king insane" by Seattle Storm co-owner Celeste Keaton. One of the fans was reportedly left in tears following the interaction. In response, the WNBA suspended Keaton for five home games and issued an undisclosed fine.
Ahead of the Portland game, activist Amy Sousa organized a rally in support of Cunningham, mirroring a similar demonstration held before the Seattle matchup. Sousa stated her intention to stand in "public solidarity" with Cunningham and the affected fans, aiming to maintain momentum on the issue.
Jennifer Sey, founder of XX-XY Athletics and a former US gymnast, also plans to hold a rally supporting Cunningham before the Fever's game in Minnesota on Saturday, according to reports. Cunningham, known for her role as a defender for star player Caitlin Clark, has previously gone viral for on-court moments during the season.
