Sonny Gray's Future With Red Sox Uncertain Amidst Retirement Speculation

The 2026 season may prove to be Sonny Gray's final year in Major League Baseball, as the veteran right-hander has not committed to playing in 2027. Gray, who will turn 37 in November, recently told The Boston Globe that he would retire "in a heartbeat" if his family desired.

Sources within the Red Sox organization are reportedly taking this possibility seriously, with some believing that retirement is on the table despite Gray's strong performance this season. When asked about the prospect of retirement, Gray declined to offer specifics, stating, "We can get into that at another time but not right now," according to the Globe.

Should 2026 be Gray's last season, his final start could potentially occur against the rival New York Yankees during the wild-card round of the postseason, a scenario that appears increasingly likely. Gray previously played for the Yankees for a season and a half after arriving before the 2017 trade deadline, a period that did not fully meet expectations for either him or the team. During his tenure with New York, the three-time All-Star posted a 4.51 ERA over 41 games before being traded to the Cincinnati Reds before the 2019 season, where he later had a Cy Young-caliber season.

Gray expressed his sentiments about the Yankees during his introductory press conference with the Red Sox, stating, "It feels good to me to go to a place where it’s easy to hate the Yankees. I never wanted to go there in the first place."

Gray is currently experiencing one of the most successful seasons of his 14-year MLB career with the Red Sox, boasting a 2.82 ERA through 163 innings pitched. He has expressed his enjoyment of his time in Boston, noting, "I’ve very, very much so enjoyed Boston. Enjoyed the guys. Fenway has been, and is, a very special place."
