Son Pleads Guilty to Murdering Mother
A 52-year-old man has admitted to fatally stabbing his 72-year-old mother in their shared home.
Adrian Hardy, 52, wept in court as he pleaded guilty to the murder of his mother, Joan Hardy, 72. The retired dinner lady was found with stab wounds at the home they shared in Linton, South Derbyshire, on Sunday, June 21. Hardy, a former factory worker with a history of alcohol problems, entered his plea at Derby Crown Court on Tuesday. He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled for sentencing in December.
Mrs. Hardy was described by neighbors as a "lovely woman" with a "heart of gold." She lived alone following the death of her husband, Richard, an Army veteran, in 2023. Neighbors expressed shock at the incident, with one recalling Mrs. Hardy as their former school dinner lady and a "good soul" who cherished her home, which she called her "sanctuary."
Hardy has previous convictions, including driving offenses. In 2015, he caused significant disruption and costs to Network Rail after walking through railway tunnels at New Street Station in Birmingham following a binge of nine pints of alcohol. This incident led to eight-and-a-half hours of train delays, costing Network Rail over £24,000. He was given a 12-month community order for obstructing an engine, with a judge noting at the time that Hardy was receiving help for his alcohol issues.
