Son of Ex-Chelsea Player Died in 40C Desert Hike After Ignoring Wife's Warning

Cassius Newton, the 34-year-old son of former Chelsea player Eddie Newton, died during a desert hike in the United Arab Emirates where temperatures reached 40C (104F), an inquest has heard. His wife had pleaded with him not to go on the excursion, which he embarked on with a friend, Aran Martinson.

Rescue teams found Newton's body in the mountainous region of Wadi Naqab on July 18, hours after he and Martinson last spoke to their wives. Both men were pronounced dead later that day. An inquest ruled their deaths were the result of misadventure, with Area Coroner Michelle Brown stating, "This was an intentional trip with unintended consequences."

Newton had called his wife at approximately 02:00 local time to inform her of their planned hike. She expressed concern, knowing the extreme heat in the canyons, which she said could feel even higher than the recorded 40C. She also noted he had been out the previous night and likely had not sufficiently charged his phone.

Newton and Martinson, who met through their work at a global company and both resided in Ras Al Khaimah, began their hike around 07:00 local time (04:00 BST). Rescue efforts were initiated after their wives became concerned upon not hearing from them for several hours. The bodies of the two men were discovered between 3km and 4km from their parked vehicle, approximately 350m apart.

Text messages presented at the inquest showed Martinson's wife messaging him at 09:26, "You must be cooking," and later, five hours without contact, "[You are] actually trying to tip me over the edge I swear."

Coroner Brown stated that the men died from severe rising body temperatures leading to organ failure. While an earlier hearing suggested temperatures reached 50C (122F) in the desert, Brown confirmed it was 40C at the time of the incident. Eddie Newton traveled to the UAE to identify his son's body.

Chelsea Football Club expressed devastation at the news of Newton's death, noting he had played for the club's academy. Martinson's wife paid tribute to her husband online, describing him as "incredibly driven, hardworking and ambitious."
