Elijah Bieniemy, the son of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, is undergoing a mental health evaluation following his arrest in connection with the alleged shooting of his mother, Mia Bieniemy. The evaluation has led to the delay of two scheduled court appearances.
Elijah Bieniemy, 27, was arrested Monday after the incident occurred Sunday night at the family's home in Virginia. He faces charges of malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharging a firearm inside a dwelling. The motive behind the alleged shooting remains under investigation by the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office.
Mia Bieniemy has been treated for multiple gunshot wounds and has since been released from the intensive care unit. Head coach Andy Reid confirmed that Mia Bieniemy is "doing better, and great from where she was."
Eric Bieniemy has been absent from team activities as the Chiefs began training camp. Pass game coordinator Joe Bleymaier and offensive line coach Andy Heck have assumed his responsibilities, with Reid also overseeing the offense. Reid stated that while Bieniemy is a "big part" of the team, it is important for him to attend to his family matters. "Eric will be back soon enough to jump in there and do his thing," Reid said, "But he's got to take care of that first."
