Elijah Bieniemy, son of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, will not appear in court until he completes a mental health competency evaluation, according to court records. The 27-year-old faces charges including malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharging a firearm inside a dwelling.

Elijah Bieniemy was arrested on Monday after allegedly shooting his mother, Mia Bieniemy, multiple times at their home in Ashburn, Virginia, on Sunday. Mia Bieniemy was found with several gunshot wounds and is currently in stable condition. Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid provided an update on Mia's condition, stating she is out of the ICU and improving.

According to a court filing by Elijah Bieniemy's public defender, the 27-year-old "appears to suffer from significant mental health issues" and "does not appear able to assist in his own defense at the present time." The court has granted the request for a mental health competency evaluation.

Elijah Bieniemy is currently being held without bond at the Loudon County Adult Detention Center. His preliminary hearing has been scheduled for September 9. Eric Bieniemy, the Chiefs' offensive coordinator, has returned to the team following a period with the Washington Commanders and Chicago Bears. He previously served as offensive coordinator in Kansas City from 2018 to 2022, contributing to two Super Bowl victories.
