A 26-year-old man accused of fatally stabbing his mother in the affluent New York town of Scarsdale had displayed concerning behavior since elementary school, according to a former classmate. Chester Green, now facing charges in the death of his mother, Marian Green, 71, exhibited traits described as "off and weird," including a preoccupation with knives, long past childhood, the classmate told The Post.
Prosecutors stated that Marian Green was killed sometime between Sunday and Tuesday in their $2.5 million home in Scarsdale, a Westchester County suburb. This marks the first homicide in the village in a decade.
Childhood Behavior
The classmate recalled Green's behavior in elementary school, noting that he would randomly shriek at people during recess and exhibited a general oddity that set him apart from his peers. "Nobody talked about violence the way he did," the classmate said, contrasting Green's conduct with other children who might have displayed typical, albeit unusual, childhood behaviors.
At approximately eight years old, Green reportedly called the classmate a "Nazi," an incident for which he received punishment. "The thing with Chester, we all knew he was very off and weird, and just didn’t act right," the classmate stated.
The classmate also recounted an incident around age 13 when Green, during a carpool to an ice skating lesson, struck her younger sister's hand, causing it to swell. Following this, the carpooling arrangement ceased.
Furthermore, the classmate's mother had told her that Green had made a chilling threat against their family during elementary school, stating he intended to murder them. This recollection, though from a long time ago, has resurfaced with the recent accusations.
Community Ties and Family Efforts
Marian Green was described as a dedicated community advocate in Scarsdale, particularly for disabled people and children with special needs, serving as the chair of the village’s Advisory Council for People with Disabilities. Friends indicated that she had made sustained efforts to help her son find a constructive path in life, encouraging his interest in blacksmithing and involving him in political and community meetings in hopes of fostering engagement.
Classmate's Reaction
News of the alleged homicide did not come as a surprise to the former classmate. "When we first saw in the news that a woman had been found dead in that house, we all assumed it was him because he’s always been insane," she said. The classmate emphasized Green's long-standing interest in sharp objects like swords and knives, which she found particularly frightening given the nature of the alleged crime. "The fact that he was interested in sharp objects was very scary, especially seeing what happened now."
