Embarking on her first solo cruise, 59-year-old Debbie initially harbored anxieties about loneliness and potential challenges. "From the moment I booked the cruise to the moment I stepped on the ship, I was on edge," she told Jam Press. "Everyone was telling me I’d meet people and make friends, but I was so nervous."

Her fears began to dissipate upon meeting Cath, a 66-year-old widow from Scotland, on a transfer bus. Cath, who was also navigating life after loss, immediately bonded with Debbie. "When I met Cath, we hit it off straight away," Debbie explained. "Neither of us knew what we were doing — it was the blind leading the blind, but we were so relieved when we met each other."

The budding friendship expanded when they encountered Donna, 58, another solo traveler whose children had recently moved out. Donna joined them after overhearing Debbie inquire about a solo meet-up at reception. "I overheard Debbie at reception asking about booking up for the solo meet-up, so I shouted, ‘I’m here on my own too’, and that was it," Donna said.

Dubbing themselves the "Witches of Eastwick" for their shared sense of humor and constant laughter, the trio became inseparable for the remainder of the trip. "We've got the same sense of humour," Donna added. "We call ourselves the Witches of Eastwick because we’re always cackling."

Beyond forming a strong friendship, Donna's cruise led to an unexpected romance. She met Alan, 61, a fellow solo traveler, and their connection deepened over subsequent cruises. "I wasn’t looking for anything but I met someone, another solo traveller, and we just clicked," she said. Her new relationship has the approval of her friends, who encourage others to embrace such opportunities: "You never know what could happen, so take the leap!"

The three women have maintained their connection, continuing to share laughter and support long after the cruise ended. "We can go months without speaking but then we’ll get on the phone and an hour later we’re still laughing. We pick up exactly where we left off," Donna noted.
