Soldiers Disarm Woman Accused of Stabbing Child After Freeway Crash

Two soldiers from Joint Base Lewis-McChord intervened Monday morning when a woman allegedly stabbed a 9-year-old girl following a rollover crash on Interstate 5 in Washington state. The incident occurred near DuPont after the woman's SUV reportedly struck a semi-truck.

According to Washington State Patrol, the 35-year-old woman, identified as a resident of Steilacoom, allegedly threatened two girls with a knife after the crash. The 9-year-old victim sustained multiple broken bones and a stab wound, while a 15-year-old girl was hospitalized but not seriously injured.

Witnesses reported seeing the SUV driving erratically before it veered across lanes, struck a semi-truck, and rolled over. The driver of the semi-truck was not injured.

Bystanders, including the two soldiers, stepped in to subdue the woman. One witness, Nathan Wilkinson, told local media that he saw the soldiers tackle the woman and disarm her of a knife. He added that he called 911 as other bystanders also helped restrain the woman.

Authorities are investigating the woman for suspected driving under the influence (DUI), vehicular assault, and first-degree assault. She was taken to a hospital for evaluation and has since been booked into the Pierce County Jail. Initial reports indicate she may face charges including assault and reckless endangerment.

The relationship between the woman and the two girls has not been specified. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
